The Nature & People Foundation at Davos 2025

On January 22, 2025, the Nature & People Foundation presented its groundbreaking Urban Biodiversity Standard (UBS) at the World Economic Forum in Davos. This framework aims to unlock private investment in urban biodiversity, addressing critical challenges such as air pollution, flooding, and the heat island effect through the creation of Urban Biodiversity Credits (UBCs).

Advancing Urban Biodiversity Solutions

The event, hosted in partnership with The Washington Post, featured a high-level panel discussion with South Africa’s Minister of Environment, Forestry, and Fisheries Dion George and Chile’s Environment Minister Maisa Rojas. Additionally, Juan Costa Climent, President of the Nature & People Foundation, participated in an in-depth interview where he highlighted the transformative potential of investing in urban biodiversity and the importance of the UBS in fostering sustainable urban development.
The UBS provides a transparent framework for valuing biodiversity services in urban environments, bridging funding gaps in green infrastructure, and promoting sustainable urban development. Pilot projects in Formentera and Rio de Janeiro already demonstrate the potential of UBCs to transform urban ecosystems and improve urban living conditions.
