OUR VISION
“Our ambition is to become the preferred partner of leading cities and leading businesses that are united to connect nature with people”
OUR MISSION
We have developed a Standard to help cities promote and align investment in biodiversity with their social and economic needs.
Our mandate includes the following activities:
Set and update the Urban Biodiversity Standard.
Develop and maintain a database on how urban biodiversity and specific species deliver different ecosystem services and address different social needs.
Promote scientific research in urban biodiversity.
Develop training programs on urban biodiversity.
Forge alliances with other organizations supporting the creation of a trusted Biodiversity Credits Market.
OUR VALUES
NATURE IS THE SOLUTION
Biodiversity in urban areas provide ecosystem services that can help address many of the challenges we face as global society.
BOTANIC BIODIVERSITY IS A PROXY FOR ALL BIODIVERSITY
Botanic diversity has both intrinsic and social value by itself. The stability and balance of global ecosystems depends on plant growth and diversity.
DIFFERENT SPECIES DELIVER DIFFERENT ECOSYSTEM SERVICES
The metabolic capacity of each of the species define the degree of intensity in which different ecosystem services are delivered.
MANAGING BIODIVERSITY IN CITIES REQUIRES A NEW PARADIGM
Managing and investing in greening cities must be aligned to ecological history and social needs of people.
We need more knowledge on which varieties of trees are better equipped to provide the ecosystem services people need.
INVESTING IN BIODIVERSITY NEEDS TO BE A SHARED RESPONSIBILITY
We need public-private cooperation and market incentives to encourage additional investment in urban biodiversity.
BIODIVERSITY IN CITIES CREATE VALUE FOR PEOPLE AND MITIGATE NEGATIVE ECONOMIC IMPACTS
We need rules and principles to measure biodiversity and its benefits to society in a standardized and comparable way
We need a common unit of account for biodiversity in cities.
