Resource Conservation and Development (RC&D) is a program administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Natural Resource Conservation Service (NCRS).  The RC&D program guides the conservation, development and utilization of natural resources, improves the general level of economic activity, and enhances the environment and standards of living in authorized RC&D areas.

NCRS provides non-profit organizations, such as Timberland, with assistance, which varies according to specific needs, but can include:

  • Evaluating proposals and ideas
  • Developing step-by-step plans
  • Identifying agencies that can help
  • Arranging technical assistance
  • Obtaining financial assistance

Since the guide was created, seven RC&D areas have been authorized in Michigan, and one application is proposed.  These include: the Conservation Resource Alliance in 1969, the Upper Peninsula Area in 1971, the Huron Pines Area in 1972, the Sauk Trails Area in 1975, the Potawatomi Area in 1991, the Saginaw Bay  Area in 1992, the Timberland Area in 1994, and the proposed Southeast Michigan Area in 1998.
